2018 Carmel Film Forum:
Focus On Filmmaking

The 2018 Carmel Film Forum: Focus On Filmmaking will feature screenwriting workshops designed to develop screenwriting skills for writers at any skill level. The workshop will be held at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Ave SE, Carmel, IN 46032. The events will take place over the course of two weekends, allowing ample time for writers to learn format, receive and complete a simple assignment, receive feedback and polish the assignment for performance. Register by July 20 at MoriartyMedia.com or by calling the Carmel Clay Public Library Audiovisual Desk at (317) 571-4281.

The first session will take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. James Moriarty, Producer/Director of Moriarty Media and Nathan Bechtold, President of the Indiana Filmmakers Network will lead the workshop. Each participant will receive a screenplay format guide to refer to throughout the class. The participants will be guided through proper formatting for screenplays before being introduced to the tried-and-true three-act formula for storytelling. They will be shown examples from several films that exemplify a well-written scene and will be given the opportunity to dissect the scene and discuss what made it so memorable. Participants will be given their assignments: a dramatic scene, no longer than 5 pages, with no more than 4 actors. Each participant will email their work and will receive feedback via email during the week.

On the evening of August 4 from 6 PM to 9 PM there will be a screening of Indy produced short films featuring the music video, ALIVE, produced in conjunction with the Carmel Clay Public Library Digital Media Lab.

The second screenwriting workshop session will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Participants can submit their scripts to be performed by professional actors. At the beginning of the session, the scripts will be numbered. Four scripts will be drawn at random to be performed at a table read by four actors: a man, a woman, a teenage boy and a teenage girl. The 4 selected screenwriters will have the opportunity to direct the talent and gain feedback from the audience.

Starting at 6 PM, Larry Lannan and Adam Aasen of from the podcast, Hamilton County Goes To The Movies, will interview John Robert Armstrong of Pigasus Pictures. They will discuss Pigasus’ Indy Indie produced feature film, The Good Catholic, as well as the involvement of Pigasus Pictures in working with young filmmakers, the development of the Indy Film Fund and efforts to create more feature productions in Indiana.

After the event at 9 PM, participants will be invited to relocate to Books & Brews Carmel, 61 West City Center Drive, Carmel, IN 46032 to network, enjoy filmmaker inspired drinks and hear live music performed by Renée Michelle Merrifield.
