Carmel Film Forum 2026 Announces Free Learning Production Sound Workshop for Filmmakers & Digital Creators
CARMEL, IN — July 26, 2026
The Carmel Film Forum is proud to announce its 2026 workshop, Learning Production Sound for Digital Creators and Filmmakers, taking place on Saturday, September 12, 2026. This comprehensive, free event will provide emerging filmmakers and digital creators with vital, hands-on training in production sound—a frequently overlooked yet critical component of professional filmmaking.
Led by professional location sound mixer Brian Hansen, who brings over 25 years of industry experience, the workshop is designed for creators of all experience levels. The event will take place across two unique locations, offering both classroom theory and immersive field practice.
Event Schedule and Highlights:
Morning Session (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Hosted in the Community Room at the Carmel Clay Public Library, this session will cover the fundamentals of sound recording. Topics include core concepts of audio quality, equipment selection—including miking techniques for video cameras and smartphones—and strategies for achieving clean, distortion-free audio.
Afternoon Session (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM): The forum will relocate to the pavilion at Flowing Well Park to explore the art of field recording and sound design. This session will delve into Foley techniques using custom soundboxes, contact microphones, and ambient noise capture. Participants will engage in an interactive smartphone sound scavenger hunt, with their findings and discussions recorded for an upcoming episode of the IFN’s Room Tone podcast.
"Sound quality is often the differentiator between amateur and professional projects," said James Moriarty, Producer and Host of the Carmel Film Forum. "With this workshop, we aim to bridge the gap in regional technical training by providing creators with the skills to elevate their video and film work through high-quality audio."
This event is funded in part by a Carmel Arts Grant and is made possible through the support of the Indy Film Fest and Round Table Recording Company. The workshop is FREE and open to the public, with an emphasis on fostering professional collaboration among sound engineers, directors, and cinematographers.
